Long Shot Azad 9780802129079 Books Reviews
- This is an amazing and heart-rending story, written by a man with the deadly skills of a long distance killer and the soul of a poet. He didn’t flinch when pulling the trigger of his Dragunov nor when laying bare his darkest thoughts and deepest fears. Yes, he is a hero to many (certainly to me as a retired military officer), but he will carry the awful hero’s burden to his grave. This is the finest example of a war autobiography I have ever read... but be forewarned that many parts will be as painful and uncomfortable to read as were the experiences he wrote about. This book will become a classic as Azad has written a timeless story about the resiliency of the human spirit caught in the maelstrom of war. Azad, I thank you for both your courage in fighting ISIS and the bravery required to write this book. I pray that one day you shall find peace and a soulmate in your remaining years.
- Great account of Kurds' sacrifices and struggle against evil. Heart wrenching events. Wonderful writing. Read this.
- Great book. Don’t necessarily agree with the all of the author’s outlooks in life but easy to see where he ended up with them. I would read a book like this one every day. Highly recommend.
- This tells the story from inside the Kurdish effort to expel Isis from. It's calibrate. It's a brutal and candid story of the eternal battle to.obtain freedom ..
- The writer of this book is supposedly a non-native English speaker who is writing his first book. It was a good one. It is very well written and the story is told in a way that draws you in and makes you care about his plight and that of the Kurdish people. I highly recommend it.
- We are all deeply indebted to this author for withstanding and surviving; for struggling to tell us this amazing story; and for enlightening us and offering the spark to ignite our support for the Kurds and their cause. A must read for every friend of freedom, for all of us who enjoy a freedom paid for by others, and for every person of conscience seeking to understand our world.
- This book gripes you and makes you feel like you are in the war! The authors ability to tell this story is unparalleled to what we read these days. Cudo’s to you Azad and I hope you find the peace you deserve.
- I was provided this book specifically to write a review. That said, I always try to be fair and honest in my reviews.
I highly recommend this book as an entertaining and interesting read for the holiday season. If you are planning a long flight anytime soon and enjoy war novels/stories then this is a good, easy, and fun read.
Having personally served in combat in the Middle East on multiple occasions and having worked extensively with the local population in a productive and friendly way, I was eager to read Azad's account of his experiences as a sniper.
Bottom-line, up-front - I found the book to be very entertaining. You will get more out of it if you recognize its limitations. Its accounts of combat and the political goals of Azad and his allies are interesting and presented in a very visceral and visual way. Combat veterans will recognize a significant level of hyperbole and inaccuracies for the sake of appealing to a broader audience.
Long Shot is to recent combat as the Borne series is to CIA operations.
The book is written in a very cinematic form. You can imagine watching the battles on the big screen as Azad lays out the sounds, smells, and visuals of the scenes.
By the by, the book has an underlying political purpose and narrative, independence for the Kurdish people. Much of the book is designed to appeal to current political sensibilities in order to make Azad's person political affiliations more appealing. He drives home points about women's equality in the Kurdish forces, dignity of the individual, etc.
I worked closely with the Kurds, and I find them to be an amazing, creative, and friendly people. I enjoyed working with the Kurds and would love to do so in the future. Honestly though, they might not be quite at the state of enlightenment that Azad describes.
All in all, I do recommend the book. Just realize that it is more about persuasion and entertainment than being a clinical study in combat.
