Ebook The Complete Funky Winkerbean Volume 7 19901992 Tom Batiuk Terri Libenson 9781606353370 Books

In this seventh volume, we see the changes in tone that now characterize Funky Winkerbean. Funky becomes more of a reality-based comic strip that depicts contemporary issues in a thought-provoking and sensitive manner. In 1992 Tom Batiuk did something even more radical he rebooted and restructured the strip, establishing that the characters had graduated from high school. From then on the series progresses in real time.
Funky Winkerbean placed Batiuk at the forefront of a new genre in comic art history. His bold characterizations and dramatic plots are engaging for his readers―teens, parents, and educators alike―because they are universal stories that people can identify with. Realizing there are many comic strips for readers interested in a fantasy world, Batiuk provides an alternative by creating stories that are powerful, real, and inspiring.
“My job is to present stories that will interest and engage readers,†he says. “In doing so, I try to make the humor authentic and natural so that my characters are re- acting just as the reader might. I think that mixing humor with serious and real themes heightens the readers’ inter- est.†Following his own muse has roused a fervent following for Batiuk. Funky has “become an untouchable comic strip,†even if its creator “does do work that’s different from the other comics on the comics page,†said Brendan Burford, general manager, syndication, at King Features.

"If you’re already a fan of the much-beloved Funky Winkerbean comic strip, you will need no introduction to this seventh volume collection of Tom Batiuk’s well-crafted work. If you do need an introduction, however, my best way of describing it would be that this is a serial you can get deeply involved in, because all the characters are real. They have depth, they are human, their lives twist, turn, evolve, interweave, and once you’ve experienced them, you feel you have always known them, and yet they continue to surprise and delight (and often have you hanging at the edge of your seat as you await the resolution of a cliff-hanger)! The very real impression that the characters in this hopefully never-ending story are truly alive is reinforced by our unique (for comic strips) experience of witnessing them age and evolve along with us. They often do this with much humor (Hey! It’s the comics!), but with much drama as well.
Volume 7 of the Complete Funky Winkerbean series covers the strips published during the years 1990-1992. The six earlier volumes in toto cover the years 1972 through 1989. Collect ’em all! (I must point out, the quality of these volumes are grand, glorious, and gorgeous. Kudos to The Kent State University Press/Black Squirrel Books for a superb production!) I personally already am anxious for the next volume, and the next, and . . . ! I am always anxious for the arrival of tomorrow morning’s “funny pages†so I may enjoy the next installment of the current Funky Winkerbean story—because, I’m hooked! (And, I’m sure you will be, too.)
These are the classics they should have allowed me to write my book reports on in high school!"
