The prospect of entering treatment is overwhelming for anyone facing a diagnosis of cancer. While patients have access to a vast amount of medical information online, this advice is often unreliable or confusing. In Living with Cancer, Drs. Vicki A. Jackson and David P. Ryan have crafted the first step-by-step guide aimed at helping people with this life-defining disease grasp what’s happening to them while coping physically and emotionally with cancer treatment.

An empathetic resource full of relatable patient stories, this book teaches patients and caregivers how to ask the right questions to get the best possible care―beginning at the moment of diagnosis. Drs. Jackson and Ryan explain how to work with a team of doctors and nurse practitioners to minimize symptoms and side effects while living as fully as possible in the face of cancer. They relay important information about understanding prognosis, and they translate what doctors mean when they describe tests, treatments, and medical procedures. Finally, they discuss hospice care and answer questions about continuing treatment and managing the final phase of life.

Based on new research and a groundbreaking program in which patients are treated with palliative care―along with the best cancer care―during the course of their illness, this honest and caring book provides the right advice to use at the right time throughout a journey with cancer. It allows a person with cancer to concentrate on living the best life possible, despite an uncertain future. Patients at every stage will find Living with Cancer a comprehensive, thoughtful, and accessible guide for navigating the illness and its treatment.

  • Perfect for both patients and their families/loved ones. Also helpful for healthcare professionals who might not practice in the field of oncology. Read it myself and bought one for a friend undergoing cancer treatment currently. The beginning provides a wonderful overview of cancer diagnoses as well as medical terminology relating to cancer. Provides many practical suggestions and ideas. It is organized to address issues you might be facing. You can select a chapter to read, or to skip if it doesn't apply, or if you are not yet ready to read about that particular topic.
  • Excellent book. I wish this book was available when our son was being diagnosed and treated for ALL 7 years ago. He is a survivor and in college now. I think it would have been beneficial to have a chapter on cancer survivors and the struggles that many survivors have after their treatments are completed. However, the description of how the patient reacts to chemo treatments and family reactions were very similar to our experience. I know we would have reacted differently to our sons disposition on chemo days and subsequent days when he was tired and didn't want to go back to school. Fortunately, he was still playing on several high school teams and on many days was self motivated. Our son asked us to read this book so we as parents would understand what he went through during treatments. I would give this book 5 stars if they had discussed the need for cancer support groups for children and young adults during and after treatments are completed. However, I highly recommend the book.
  • This is by far the first book on cancer that I have read that helps from the beginning to the end. It guides you to understand the human side along with the need for support from your team while fighting this disease. It takes into account both sides from the patient/family to the medical team that is by your side throughout the fight.

I will buy this for others who are diagnosed. It really is a Step-by-Step Guide.
  • Excellent guide for anyone touched by cancer, whether you are patient, caregiver, friend, loved one. The emphasis is on living. Living with Cancer takes complicated medical processes and explains them in understandable language, a must read!
  • I highly recommend this book to anyone that is newly diagnosed with cancer. It really helped me and my husband understand and prepare for the battle. It's an easy read written in simple terms that anyone can follow and understand. It explains many of the confusing medical jargon that new patients encounter.
  • Very helpful
  • Easy to understand, answers many questions that you might not ordinarily think of asking. Very thorough and to the point. I highly recommend this book both for patients and for caregivers. Lily
  • Lucky most was not relevant to my stage 1 with no need for further treatment. Thank God! Good for those especially who must have chemo or radiation.
